Abraham Nemeth (1918 - 2013)
- Abraham Nemeth was born in New York City and attended mainstream public school as a totally blind child.
- He studied psychology and earned his undergraduate degree and masters from Brooklyn College and Colombia University, respectively.
- While looking for a job as a psychologist, he took evening courses in math and physics at Brooklyn College, and later at Columbia University, having a latent interest in mathematics.
- He subsequently obtained a PhD in mathematics from Wayne State University, Detroit.
- While studying, he found that there was a need for a more effective way to communicate mathematics among blind people.
- This led him to develop the Nemeth Braille Code for Mathematics and Science Notation, which is still used extensively to this day.
