External Examiner Vacancies

External Examiners are a highly valued part of the university’s quality assurance and enhancement activity. Throughout their tenure, External Examiners engage in a constructive academic dialogue with their designated programme team(s) and students/apprentices, whilst at the same time safeguarding and upholding academic standards.

External Examiners will normally engage with their designated provision for 4 years, and are normally required to:

  • Ensure that the standard of university awards is upheld and maintained.
  • Engage with the moderation of student/apprentice work, and judge whether students/apprentices have fulfilled the objectives of the programme, the learning outcomes of the modules and reached the required standard. This may involve, for example, placement visits if required by Professional Statutory and Regulatory Bodies (PSRBs).
  • Be able to compare the performance of students/apprentices with that of their peers on comparable programmes elsewhere.
  • Approve assessments associated with their programme(s), for the coming academic year.
  • Ensure that assessments are conducted in accordance with all applicable regulations.
  • Attend the Board(s) of Examiners meetings.
  • Meet with students/apprentices at least once during their period of  engagement.
  • Complete an External Examiner Annual Report each year.
  • Consider and comment on:

      - The effectiveness of the assessments.

     - Programme and module content.

     - Programme and module amendments, where required.

     - Applications for Recognition for Prior (Experiential) Learning (RP(E)L), where required.

     - Mapping for Articulation Proposals, where required.

Our standard fee is £500, paid annually, following receipt of a completed External Examiner Annual Report.

Please note, where programmes are clustered under a single vacancy reference, we are unable to accept expressions of interest for individual programmes within a cluster.

All External Examiner appointments are subject to approval by the university and verification of the External Examiner’s right to work in the UK. The decision to appoint will be based upon a nominee’s suitability against the university’s agreed appointment criteria. For collaborative provision, previous experience of External Examining is normally required. For internal provision, previous External Examining experience is not essential, as the university is able to arrange for successful nominees to be mentored during their first year of engagement. For all of our engaged External Examiners, the university facilitates External Examiner Briefing Sessions, which provide an introduction to our Institution, including, but not limited to,  our Academic Framework Regulations,  the operation of External Examining within the university and the report and response process .

Expressions of interest will be forwarded to the relevant programme leader for consideration. Should you not receive a communication from the programme team within four weeks of expressing your interest, you should assume that, on this occasion, the decision has been taken not to nominate you as External Examiner.

 

Please note that we will not be able to progress with expressions of interest that are not accompanied by a CV.

If a nomination is approved by External Examiner Panel, this will be subject to confirmation of the nominee’s Right to Work in the UK.  Liverpool John Moores University is required to comply with UKVI requirements, and before any approved engagement can commence, the External Examiner’s proof of eligibility to work in the UK will need to be verified. Further details of the process for this verification, and full instructions for the relevant document checks, will be sent to newly approved External Examiners following their successful outcome at External Examiner Panel.
