Academic Registry Policy Update
The Academic Board has recently approved an update to the Personal Circumstances Policy, as well as detailed supporting guidance for LJMU students and the Personal Circumstances Panel.
Personal Circumstances Policy
It is each student’s responsibility to undertake the required assessments for their programme of study on or by the dates set by the university. However, the university recognises that students may encounter personal difficulties or circumstances outside of their control that affect their ability to attempt or complete assessments. This policy provides details of the processes designed to support students in those situations.
Personal Circumstances Claims – Guidance for Students
The Personal Circumstances Policy now provides detailed guidance for students in relation to:
- Illness or other cause that prevents a student from submitting or completing a piece of work
- Explaining all 3 options under this application and when they should be used
- Examples of circumstances that are likely to be accepted and those that are unlikely to be accepted
- The deadline for claims and how late applications may be accepted if a valid reason for the late submission is provided
- Clarifying what an accepted claim means – “There can only be one outcome from a valid claim – deferral of the assessment attempt to a later date. PC claims cannot change marks”
- Specifying that students in their final year with a deferral will have a delayed graduation
