Passion for Liverpool drives graduate Peter’s career

Graduating student Peter Eric Lang absolutely loves Liverpool.

So much so, he has created a career around his passion for the city – and chosen an education at LJMU to match.

Founder and editor of The Liverpudlian, a media company focussing on the city’s amazing culture, history, architecture and events, Peter, 28, wants the world to see the best of Liverpool and insists he’s spoiled for choice.

“It’s such a fascinating place, there’s nowhere like it. It’s not just the things you can see, it’s the people, their stories, their outlook on life.”

Peter has graduated with first-class honours in BA Media Production, where he has excelled – in part driven by his mission to create The Liverpudlian.

“The site started life just before I enrolled at LJMU. It began as a passion project and a place to home all of the photographs I would take of street art and architecture around Liverpool and the City Region. Then I started interviewing artists and musicians and reporting on local events and issues, and it has snowballed,” he says.

“Local websites are usually news or entertainment, but The Liverpudlian has become a real eclectic mix which is informative, entertaining and ultimately positive about this part of the world,” he says.

Peter grew up on the Wirral and went to sixth-form in the Studio School in the Baltic Triangle before working for a few years in the creative industries.

Studying at LJMU has expanded his media skills and allowed Peter to build his business in a what he calls “a sustainable and organic way”. Support from the university’s Start-Up Hub has been much appreciated: “I’ve had amazing support from Tom Strodbeck and the hub team which has given me a huge boost, both in confidence and knowledge.”

Peter says The Liverpudlian has been “incredibly hard work”, especially while studying for a degree and training to be a Liverpool tour guide.

“Funnily enough I’ve completed my guide exams for Liverpool Cathedral, so I know absolutely loads about today’s venue!” he laughs.

Future plans? “Well, I’d like to study a Master's Degree at LJMU in Cities, Culture & Creativity, whilst continuing to grow The Liverpudlian as a media company. I am also working towards becoming qualified as a Liverpool City Region Blue Badge Tour Guide which complements my previous jobs as a Tour Guide across Liverpool.”

Lecturer Camilla Affleck, from The Screen School, said: “Peter’s website is remarkable and he’s developed some great contacts. He’s full of fascinating stories about people’s he’s met. Really an outstanding graduate!”
