Your guide to moving into your student accommodation

We know lots of our students commute to LJMU or are undertaking postgraduate study and live in the local area. But if you are a new student moving into student accommodation, here’s our guide to helping your move go as smoothly as possible.

What to bring

Paperwork and ID documents

These will have been requested by your student accommodation provider and us at LJMU - make sure to keep them safe.

Towels and bedding

You’ll need to bring bedding – sheets, pillows, pillow cases, blankets and duvets – for your bed, but leave the mattress at home, this will be provided but do check the sizes with your accommodation provider. And don’t forget to pack some towels.

Pans, utensils, crockery and cutlery

All student halls have basic appliances (like a cooker, fridge-freezer and a microwave), but you’ll have to bring your own crockery (plates, bowels, mugs) and cutlery. It’s a good idea to wait until you arrive to make larger purchases like a kettle or toaster so you don’t end up with too many in one flat.

Items for your bedroom

Bring whatever you like for your bedroom but subject to any list of restricted items that your hall owner has given you. Pack smart, your hall bedroom may be smaller than you are used to.

There are many homeware and discount stores in Liverpool city centre within easy walking distance, such as Argos and Home Bargains, so don’t worry if you forget something or are not sure. We also recommend going to local charity or second-hand shops to purchase items at a reduced price - this will help you to save money and it's better for the environment.

TV licence

Your flat may contain a communal TV and if so, the licence will have been purchased for it. You will need to buy a licence for any device that you bring, if you plan to watch or record live programmes. Visit the TV Licensing website.

What not to bring

No pets, no matter how small.

No candles, while they smell great, they are a fire hazard. Consider a diffusor instead.

No electric blankets are needed as halls will be heated in the winter and at no additional cost.

Moving in dates for September 2024

Your moving in date and slot will have been emailed to you as part of your accommodation confirmation. Most undergraduate students will move in between Thursday 12 and Saturday 14 September 2024 with international and postgraduate students moving from Saturday 7 September 2024.
