Leona is a Lecturer in Criminology within the School of Justice Studies. Alongside this role she is completing a Doctorate in Social Science research on the topic of migration and politics which focuses on young people’s perspectives of migration and the impact this has on their identity and political participation. Prior to this Leona completed her Masters by Research into the experiences of refugees during the resettlement process in the United Kingdom (UK). This work sought to highlight how the experiences of refugees and asylum seekers were understood by resettlement workers as well as the role of resettlement workers in supporting refugees and how they occupy a unique position to advocate for change to improve the resettlement process. Her interest in migration stems from her involvement working with a charity supporting refugees and asylum seekers which highlighted some of the issues and challenges.
