Our research

A global reputation for excellence

We have eight first-rate research institutes and centres.

Four Units of Assessment (UoA 9 -Physics; UoA 11 - Computer Science and Informatics; UoA 12 - Engineering; and UoA 13 Architecture, Built Environment and Planning) with more than 150 FET members were submitted in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework. All four UoAs have demonstrated a significant increase in the volume of world-leading research outputs from REF 2014 to REF 2021. Among top performing areas were Astrophysics, where 97% of the research outputs was world-leading or internationally-excellent; and Engineering with 96%. Both Astrophysics and Engineering have their research impact rated 100% world-leading or internationally-excellent. 80% of the faculty’s research is rated world-leading or internationally-excellent.

In the future, we will continue to strengthen our research centres and institutes by investing in state-of-the-art facilities.
