I am Assistant Academic Registrar with responsibility for leading the university's student governance team. The team manage processes around academic appeals, complaints, student behaviour and discipline, students with criminal convictions, fitness to practise procedures and fitness to study assessments.
My academic background is in interdisciplinary cultural studies, particularly the study of popular music and popular culture. From 2001 to 2013, I led the university's BA Popular Music Studies programme.
I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
I am chair of the trustees of Writing on the Wall, a registered charity and limited company. Writing on the Wall is a dynamic, Liverpool-based community organisation that coordinates projects and events that celebrate writing in all its forms. Writing on the Wall is part of Arts Council England's National Portfolio.
In recent years, I have developed a research interest in visual representations of conflict in Northern Ireland. In 2015, I published a photographic monograph entitled "The Writing on the Wall: A Visual History of Northern Ireland's Troubles" (Bluecoat Press). Ongoing work in this area is publicised on https://twitter.com/IREmurals
In spring 2022, Reaktion Books published my monograph "Positive Vibrations: Politics, Politricks and the Story of Reggae".
