Shirley is a graduate of the University of Durham and has an MBA from Lancaster University.

She retired from an executive career in Human Resources in 2019 after 37 years with Pilkington and then NSG (Nippon Sheet Glass). Following the acquisition of Pilkington by NSG, Shirley was appointed HR Director Global Operations and then in 2016, Chief HR Officer of NSG Group. In this role she led the HR Function with reports on four continents.

Shirley now volunteers for Willowbrook Hospice in St. Helens and has previously been a school governor and a non - executive director of an NHS Trust. 

Shirley lives in Merseyside and is married with two children. She enjoys ballroom and latin dancing, Pilates and going to the theatre.
