Course aim

This module aims to:

  • enhance palliative care practice and understanding to generalist health and social care professionals
  • promote high quality care for all those approaching the end of their lives whatever their condition and whatever setting in which they may reside

Course content

Topics covered on this module include:

  • Symptom management of pain and other distressing symptoms
  • End of life care service provision
  • Communication challenges in the palliative care assessment process
  • Loss, grief and bereavement, and spiritual care
  • Support mechanisms for patient's, families and staff
  • Role of Advanced Care Planning in promoting choice

Teaching and learning

    The delivery will be over a 12 week period, attending alternate weeks. There are five full day attendances plus an additional half-day tutorial support. The content is delivered using a blended approach of online and classroom activity. Most sessions are face to face and online sessions will be delivered both synchronously via Zoom and asynchronously using directed study sessions.

    In order to be considered for this palliative care course, you should have:

    • current registration as a health or social care professional
    • be employed a health or social care organisation
    • have successful completed Level 5 study

How to apply

To apply for this programme, you are required to complete an LJMU CPD application form. You will need to provide details of your qualifications and curent employment.

Assessment

Assessment will be via a 4,500 word Case Study, where you will be expected to:

  • demonstrate a systematic understanding of the key aspects of palliative care in relation to an episode of care
  • consider the challenges of uncertainty, limits of knowledge and resources in relation to your own practice

CPD award

This Continuing Professional Development module can be studied within the BSc (Hons) Health and Social Care Development award framework or as a single CPD.
