Research within Liverpool Screen School

A community of internationally acclaimed scholars.

Within our School we have three distinct research groups:

• Communication, Cultural and Media Studies
• LJMU Writers’ Workshop
• Drama and Performance

The School has had many recent successes within publications, knowledge exchange partnerships and grant applications. We have also developed collaborations with external partners, such as Willy Russell, the Everyman and Playhouse Theatre, Sound City, Lancashire Constabulary, the social services within Lancashire and the Royal Court Liverpool theatre.

In addition to these examples, we developed Liverpool Film Seminar in partnership with the University of Liverpool. Liverpool Film Seminar is an initiative that provides a forum for postgraduates and scholars to exchange ideas and celebrate film. Similarly, in 2016 we launched Liverpool Screen School Research Seminar - a series of talks exploring media, culture and identity.

Currently, we are also developing a Performing Arts Research Group with LJMU Dance and the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. Thanks to these activities, 54% of our research was ranked as world-leading or internationally excellent in the most recent research assessment (REF2021).

Evidence that our work is high-impact can be seen from the fact it has not only been used to inform the Leveson enquiry into press standards, but it has also been used within foreign policy and, thanks to our Free Write project (funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation), our research has also helped to change the lives of prisoners and offenders within the UK.

In the future we aim to further strengthen our work with external stakeholders. We also plan to build upon our existing research strengths, as well as being open to the emergence of new strands and interests within our already diverse research expertise.

Within these two clusters our research tends to revolve around:

• Use of new and emerging technologies in business, education and society
• National identity and security discourse
• Transnational cinema (European, African-American)
• Immersive documentary, film-making, and radio programme productions
• Responsible and ethical journalism
