As an undergraduate you will have the opportunity to take a placement year within your sandwich degree. Previously, students have secured exciting positions working for companies such as Deloitte, Barratt Developments, Transport for London, Kier, MLM Engineering, Balfour Beatty, Sutcliffes, Jackson Civils and local councils. Although placement years could provide you with a wealth of experience and knowledge, we also encourage our students to go on short-term placements and work shadow too.
Gaining knowledge of the global issues that affect your field will help you succeed professionally. This is why we will encourage you to go on an international placement, to places like Australia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, the USA and Canada.
Our Building Surveying and Quantity Surveying students, for example, have worked at Faithful and Gould in Arizona. Our Quantity Surveying students have also held placements with CB Ross in Toronto, while our Civil Engineering students have been on placements at Brunsfield, Kuala Lumpur.
Other international organisations we collaborate with include the University of Malaya, Georgia Institute of Technology and the Zurich University of Applied Sciences. These collaborations give our students the chance to go on an exchange or study programme abroad.
Our School organises a lively programme of field trips, from visits to the Shard, the Bank of England and the Law Courts, to residential trips, such as the month-long exchange programme we run with the University of Malaya.
These site and field visits are supported by our industry partners, including major capital projects such as the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and the Alder Hey Children’s hospital.
So that you graduate with the skills employers are looking for, we make sure our courses are relevant to your industry. To achieve this, staff keep up-to-date with trends through knowledge transfer partnerships with industry leaders. Academic staff are also members of professional bodies and we ensure our curriculum is informed by our cutting-edge research.
Throughout your time with us you will be given the opportunity to gain industry skills. Our students undertake industry-based projects. For example, our MEng students have recently designed an extension to a local sports stadium. These major design projects develop team working skills and will enable you to integrate the knowledge you have gained on your course and apply it to a practical situation.
Our civil engineering degree courses are accredited, which will help you to become a chartered engineer after graduation.
Every year we invite respected employers and professional bodies to our Employer Career Day, giving you the chance to discuss your career options and potential future employment with company representatives.
Throughout the year our School takes part in a range of thought-provoking events, including the Annual End of Year Show (in conjunction with Baltic Creative) and the Annual Built Environment and Natural Environment Research Student Conference.
The Learning Enhancement Team ensure innovations in learning and teaching are explored and embedded within our School’s curriculum.
Staff development events are organised to make sure academic staff are armed with the most effective tools and techniques to support your learning. The primary aim of the team is to ensure that you are as engaged and challenged by your programme as possible.
