Dr. Philippa McCabe is a Senior Lecturer in Biostatistics at Liverpool John Moores University. Her research interests lie in data analysis and machine learning, with a particular focus on applications in healthcare and education. She holds a PhD in Mathematics, where her work centred on diagnostic and predictive modelling in osteoarthritis using statistical and machine learning methods.
Her interdisciplinary research spans several departments including pharmacy, psychology, and mathematics. Her work focuses on the development of interpretable machine learning models to improve trust and transparency in healthcare settings. She is particularly interested in addressing disparities in diagnostics for females and exploring wider female health inequalities through data-driven approaches. In the field of education, her research centres on student wellbeing and engagement, with a focus on mathematics and coding anxiety, as well as the impact of exam location on performance and anxiety levels.
Dr. McCabe has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and presents regularly at national and international conferences. She is a co-investigator on funded research projects and supervises both undergraduate and postgraduate research students. Alongside her research, she teaches across Levels 3 to 7 in statistics and data analysis, and contributes to curriculum development and assessment design.
She is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a STEM Ambassador, and a reviewer for journals including PLOS One. In 2022, she received a Special Recognition Award from students for her contribution to teaching and support.
