Function of blood vessels
Are you over 50 years of age and would like to take part in a research project looking at the effects of exercise on the function of blood vessels?
Participants should:
- Be over 50 years of age
- Have no leg or arm injuries
- Have normal cholesterol or high cholesterol controlled with medication
- Have normal blood pressure or high blood pressure controlled with medication
If you take part, what would you have to do?
We will ask you to come to the labs at Liverpool John Moores University on five occasions for approximately two hours each visit and to complete six days of upper limb exercise (squeezing a handgrip), or lower limb exercise (squatting) exercises (separately) at home. During the visits, you would perform squatting or handgrip exercise, or lay quietly and then undergo a protocol of temporary tissue ischemic reperfusion injury by inflating a cuff on your arm to a pressure above your normal blood pressure for a short period. During the tests we will measure blood pressure, heart rate and the blood flow through a blood vessel of an arm. A blood sample via finger prick will be used to determine baseline measures of glucose and cholesterol prior to your first visit.
You will be reimbursed with a £100 voucher for your participation in the study.
Further details of the research are included in this participant information sheet.
