Course aim
This course is for individuals either already working in or those seeking to work in digital content creation.
This course will allow you to identify a range of creative video production practices. At the end of the course, you will be able to practice and apply a range of professional video production techniques. You will also be able to explain a creative concept to an expert panel.
Course content
This course is currently undergoing its scheduled programme review, which may impact the advertised modules. Programme review is a standard part of the University’s approach to quality assurance and enhancement, enabling us to ensure that our courses remain up to date and maintain their high standard and relevancy.
Once the review is completed, this course website page will be updated to reflect any approved changes to the advertised course. These approved changes will also be communicated to those who apply for the course to ensure they wish to proceed with their application.
You will be given the opportunity to develop skills in video production, animation and motion graphic practice and creative production. You will also develop an understanding of how organisations may adopt digital video content.
You will produce four to five short films (between 30 seconds and 2 minutes in length), with increasing levels of complexity, that explore and refine different skills and techniques.
You will work in different teams and different roles for each brief, enabling you to create an individual portfolio of work which you will use to create your own personal showreel. This showreel will include titles and a personal, short introduction to camera.
You will then complete an individual challenge (of your own choosing), consisting of an independent brief that will be pitched to an industry panel.
Course content may include, but is not limited to, the development of:
- Professional video production skills, cinematography (lighting, sound, shot types, framing etc.)
- Storytelling techniques and narrative theories
- Editing using industry standard software, including project setup and interface, the organization of video documents, creating and editing visual elements, and publishing digital media
- Film analysis
- Film theories and practices including audience and reception theories, and target audiences and platforms
- Interpersonal skills
- Presentation skills
Teaching and learning
You will watch, analyse, and discuss a range of different film and video styles and genres. Working in small teams, you will design and formulate a response to a given brief in a similar style to the videos that have been explored in the seminar sessions.
You will be supported by a range of asynchronous lectures and demonstrations that will explore different aspects of video production. Practical sessions and workshops will allow you to develop and practice some of the techniques discussed within a supportive environment. Group and individual tutorials will be used to give formative feedback from peers and lecturers.
The course will commence with an introduction to the creative industries by industry guests, giving you an overview of their industry and what key skills students will need to develop to enable them to be successful within their industry.
You will analyse professional video content and will apply some of the skills and techniques discovered to your own video productions before presenting your work to an industry panel.
