BRM for Pilots

Major UK and overseas harbour authorities require their pilots to undertake training in bridge resource management and attend a refresher course every five years.

This course is aimed at pilots seeking to build or refresh their bridge resource management skills.

The course is primarily designed to be offered over three days but can be tailored to specific harbour or pilotage authority requirements.

Duration: Three days

Prerequisites: Pilots holding a PEC for nominated harbour

Assessment: Continuous monitoring of performance and procedural understanding throughout the course.

Teaching: The candidates are expected to implement harbour’s specific navigational procedures and resource management principles learnt in the classroom.

Accreditation/Approval: Liverpool John Moores University

Course overview

The aim of the training is to prepare pilots in effective bridge resource management procedures. Upon successful completion of the course, delegates will be able to:

  • comprehend fundamental aspects of human behaviour and the influence of cultural background and personality differences,
  • recognise the causes and impacts of stress and fatigue, and understand the significance of maintaining healthy sleep patterns,
  • develop and implement a comprehensive passage plan,
  • optimise the use of available resources to ensure safe vessel navigation,
  • employ clear and efficient communication techniques within the bridge team,
  • recognise the importance and benefits of robust bridge procedures,
  • accurately analyse and interpret ship manoeuvring information.

There is no formal examination, but the delegate’s performance and understanding will be continuously assessed throughout the course. A certificate will be issued by demonstration that the defined objectives have been met.
