University Secretary and General Counsel: Maria Burquest
Legal and Governance Services consists of the Legal Team, the Data Protection and Information Governance Team and the University Secretariat.
Legal Team
We are a small team providing legal pragmatic advice and support for all Faculties and Departments. We work closely with partners within the university to ensure that strategic aims are met and that we support colleagues to make better-informed decisions. We promote an awareness of legal implications of activities and decisions, ensuring that risks are identified promptly and mitigated effectively.
More information about the Legal Team can be accessed online including how to instruct the Legal Team.
Data Protection and Information Governance Team
We provide advice and guidance across the university on all matters relating to data protection and information compliance. We are responsible for the administration of information requests and support the university in meeting its statutory obligations under information legislation. We raise privacy and security awareness across the organisation and promote best practice.

University Secretariat
The Secretariat supports the University Secretary and General Counsel in the maintenance of the university's reputation for excellence in governance and management. It works across the organisation providing governance and management guidance and advice in the areas of corporate constitutional governance, committee management and policy management.
The Secretariat provides reassurance to regulators and stakeholders on the adequacy of its governance arrangements and performance. It also provides a support service for the Board of Governors and its committees and manages and co-ordinates the university's committee structures.
