In the latest research assessment (Research Excellence Framework 2021) organized by the UK Higher Education Funding Council, the Centre’s academics were submitted to the Unit of Assessment in Engineering, where 96% of these research outputs were rated as world leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*). 100% of the Research Impact Case Studies were assessed as world leading or internationally excellent.
Together with industry, researchers from the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Research Centre are currently developing products and services that will improve our daily lives.
Research impact
The Electrical and Electronic Engineering Research Centre’s work affects us all. In 2018, for example, the Centre developed a new True Random Number Generator (TRNG) for hardware security of Internet-of-Things (IoTs).
Random Numbers are required in cryptography and authentication and their generator is an essential component of security systems. The algorithm-based software generators used in some security systems are not truly random and are vulnerable to attack. The TRNG developed by the Centre harvests the randomness of Random Telegraph Noise in nanoscale transistors without using an algorithm and is 10 times faster than those reported by early works.
The staff from the Centre were invited to demonstrate their TRNG at international conferences and exhibitions, such as 2018 International Security Expo in London and a patent has been awarded for its invention. Its commercial application is currently explored.
