Clinical exercise physiologists: establishment and recognition as healthcare professional in UK
With funding from Research England, we established Clinical Exercise Physiologists (CEPs) as a registered health professional in the UK.
Clinical Exercise Physiologists are university qualified health professionals who specialise in the prescription and delivery of evidence-based exercise interventions to optimise the prevention, treatment and long-term management of acute, sub-acute, chronic and complex conditions (NHS careers).
Our work involved identifying and working with an established regulator to develop pathways for formal registration of CEPs based upon formal education, knowledge, skills and competencies.
Research
With funding from Research England, we have led national efforts to establish and advance recognition of Clinical Exercise Physiologists (CEPs) in the UK. This has included forming Clinical Exercise Physiology UK (CEP-UK), which advises the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS) on standards for education, training, and professional practice.
Key professional infrastructure has been developed, including AHCS-accredited MSc programmes, a national scope of practice, curriculum framework, and an equivalence pathway to support CEP registration.
CEPs are now recognised as part of the UK healthcare science workforce, with CEP-UK representing the profession on the AHCS Professional Bodies Council.
Our research has mapped UK clinical exercise services, examined CEP-led models and explored stakeholder perspectives and postgraduate training. Together, this work has helped define the knowledge, skills, and standards required for CEP practice.
Building on this foundation, we are now exploring embedding new CEP-led services in primary and secondary care. Our research will evaluate their feasibility, value, and scalability to inform wider national adoption.
